Markets: Resources
In today’s world, resources are precious. Failure to effectively manage resources and minimise waste can spark serious environmental and economic consequences. SEMF draws on a detailed understanding of the product lifecycle to help clients reconsider their approach to finite resources and develop eco-conscious strategies for the management of waste. We strive to reconcile our partners’ commercial, social and technical imperatives, an ethos which sets the stage for profitability and sustainable growth.
At SEMF, we partner with the minerals industry to provide inventive solutions to complex demands. We add significant value to mining and mineral processing projects by managing and expediting the approvals process and providing specialised environmental support across all aspects of environmental management, and engineering design and project management.
SEMF knows that water is among our essential resources and uses holistic thinking and local insight to provide support to, and solutions for the water and wastewater industry sector.
SEMF is also at the forefront of bulks material handling and processing and have forged close relationships with key players across every Australian state. We provide innovative solutions for conveyor belts, stackers, storage facilities and shiploaders and conduct options investigations and condition assessments to enforce high performance and quality control.
Bulk materials handling
In recent years, Australia’s resources boom has heightened the need for bulk materials handling processes that optimise productivity while minimising environmental impact. This calls for a mastery of logistical challenges and specific geographical contexts - factors that help facilitate a seamless and efficient delivery process.
SEMF works with leading players in the mining and resources industry to deliver bulk materials handling projects that exceed commercial and environmental goals. We take an integrated approach to developing conveyor systems and stackers that deliver major cost and time benefits and construct bulk storage facilities and shiploaders that set new benchmarks for spillage and waste control.
Our bulk materials handling projects are informed by innovative thinking and based on a collaborative and synergetic partner approach. This has paved the way for the success of solutions such as the state-of-the-art conveyor belt we designed for the Condong Sugar Mill and the high-capacity iron ore shiploader we constructed in Port Esperance, in a joint venture with John Holland Engineering.
Forestry
The Australian timber industry is plagued by major sustainability and environmental issues as well as pressing economic concerns. It faces a nationwide shortage of authorised forests and timber plantations, even as demand for forestry products escalates on a national and global level.
SEMF collaborates with government bodies and private organisations on a wide range of forestry and timber projects. We provide engineering design, feasibility studies, environmental approvals, and the full range of environmental and engineering support for timber processing operations.
SEMF also assists with land use planning for timber mills and plantations and partners with clients to create comprehensive plans for sustainable timber management and harvesting.
Minerals
The minerals industry demands specialised solutions for safe and cost-effective operations as well as a close knowledge of local communities and environmental contexts. SEMF delivers these by combining a commercial sensibility and engineering and environmental expertise with a sustainable mindset and focus on innovation.
At SEMF, we provide clients developing new mines with total project support for both environmental management and engineering. This support commences with client, government agency and community liaison, and preparation of the necessary approval documentation. We can then prepare feasibility studies, and undertake conceptual and detailed engineering design for all aspects of the project. In the project construction phase we can provide project management, procurement, commissioning, construction management, and finally, training and post-commissioning support.
For existing mining and processing operations we provide a full range of environmental support. This spans ecological assessments, auditing, approvals and management plans along with environmental monitoring, decommissioning and rehabilitation. We also provide end-to-end engineering services including assistance with plant design, automation and project management as well as with the structural, mechanical and civil aspects of a project.
Water and wastewater
SEMF partners with water authorities, government departments and private clients to provide design, documentation and construction management across a wide spectrum of water supply projects. These range from single residential solutions to expansive industrial and community systems.
At SEMF, we deliver integrated environmental and engineering solutions that resolve the complex and interrelated requirements of water, stormwater and wastewater management. We understand the relationship between the integrated water cycle, urban infrastructure, ecosystems and industry and draw on this to meet the diverse requirements of stakeholders and communities.
SEMF’s capabilities range from the provision of services related to a single area of practice, such as water in natural catchment systems, flood risk management and supply to integrated engineering systems for re-use, recycling, drainage and irrigation. Our methodology is founded on technical expertise and local knowledge and shaped by our ability to reconcile sustainable and commercial outcomes.
From improving effluent quality to re-use of various waste products, SEMF is well-placed to help industry develop effective wastewater systems. Our core waste services include investigation, planning, options development and assessment for sewerage reticulation, treatment, recycling and reuse as well as full economic analysis of options, including whole of life costing and net present value analysis.
SEMF’s approach to hydrology and stormwater drainage services is underpinned by the principles of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD). We partner with local government, industry and mining bodies to perform catchment analysis and flood management, including flood modelling, flood early warning and evacuation planning as well as risk assessment. We also provide design and assessment for small diameter drainage reticulation and trunk drainage pipelines and channels.

SEMF also works in Building and property, Manufacturing and processing and Energy.
